Biography
After playing at some of the most renowned jazz venues in the world such as the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the Blue Note in New York, Emrah Kotan is emerging with a solo album that encompasses the essence of jazz - style, sophistication and freedom of personal expression.
The classically trained percussionist came to the United States from his native Turkey, and received his Master's degree in Jazz Studies from Georgia State University. While studying, Emrah, Jose Manuel Garcia and Matt Stallard formed the award-winning jazz trio, International Groove Conspiracy. At the Atlanta Jazz Festival, their electrifying performance led them to sign under the management of the legendary jazz pianist, Ahmad Jamal.
Emrah is now collaborating with Jose and Matt along with a handful of other gifted musicians to record his solo project. Emrah's original compositions and arrangements range from soft, melodious ballads to flavorful brews of jazz fusion with a touch of world percussive spice. His debut album, Emrah Kotan, is due for release in Fall 2010.
Aside from being one of Atlanta's most eclectic and crowd-pleasing drummers, Emrah is an educator and Director of the Jazz and World Percussion Ensembles at Agnes Scott College. He also teaches privately and performs regularly for children with the world percussion trio, Ritmo Blu.
